The Year is Going Well at our Childcare Centres

Dear donors and friends,

Concerns is glad share some updates on the projects that you have generously supported and contributed to.

At our childcare centres, children have been enjoying learning through play and a variety of engaging activities.

Our teachers have been able to plan, prepare and conduct activities with the available local materials. Over the last few months, children have learnt many concepts. Many are now able to read picture books and point out objects, naming them in English. They have learnt to identify, sort and name primary colours and shapes and can respond to teachers' questions in English. They are developing fine motor skills through colouring activities and are making good progress in being able to use a pencil to trace and write alphabet letters and numbers.

Teachers monitor each child's progress and communicate regularly with parents. Attendance is around 75% every month in all five centres. We are dealing with absenteeism by meeting up with mothers when a child misses days at the centre and discussing any issues and possible solutions. To monitor the children's health, teachers record their weight every month and evaluate their growth, as advised by our doctor. 50% of the children have gained at least 500g of weight and for those not growing well, a meeting is set up with mothers to give guidance on diet and nutrition.

On 7th October, we celebrated Diwali, a popular Hindu festival, at our centres by bursting crackers and eating special sweets. The children enjoyed this cultural event very much.

We want to thank you again for your generosity in donating to our project. With your support, we are able to provide a healthy lifestyle and a good start in education for these children from disadvantaged backgrounds here in Bangalore.

June to August 2017 at Concerns Childcare Centres

New preschool children

Dear Donor and Friend,

In June and July this year, Concerns Universe Foundation enrolled a new cohort of 150 young children from families challenged with poverty for non-formal preschool education. The children's mothers work from morning to late afternoon, and this service is invaluable to them. Games and toys were provided and fun activities conducted to encourage the children to relax and feel happy in their new surroundings, as it was their first time out of their homes.

By August, the children were well settled into the routines of the centre. They were attending regularly and were happily enjoying singing songs, colouring pictures and reading picture books in a stimulating environment. Activities such as playing with building blocks, stringing beads, drawing, making collages and playing with balls help to develop motor skills, social skills and creativity.

All of the children had their height and weight recorded and nearly 120 children had a general health check-up by our doctor, Dr. Eileen. This covered an examination of dental health, skin health, ear wax level, heart beat and a check for common ailments in young children. Nearly 50% of children were found to be underweight for their age. Based on the doctor's assessments, steps were taken to educate and guide parents through individual and group meetings in caring for their child's health.

We provide the children with nutritious food to supplement their diet. They drink porridge made from protein mix and eat boiled lentils with greens on alternative days. Once a week, they enjoy eating eggs. Nearly 80 mothers attended two awareness meetings conducted at the childcare centres. They were advised in the provision of affordable nutritious food for their children and watched a demonstration class on making porridge.

Thanks to your generous support, we have been able to provide a safe and stimulating environment for these young children, giving them a good start to their education and ensuring that they are healthy and developing well. We are sincerely grateful for your invaluable support in this project.
