EBZEF Project Update #9

By Linda O. Bowers | Executive Director

The good news for EBZEF scholarship recipients, "Beth’s Girls," is that those who have graduated with teaching credentials are at last being hired by the Ministry of Education (MOE). Some have been waiting for several years to put their education to use. We are pleased that Beth’s Lady Sandra Kamulosu, who has been an outstanding librarian for the Memorial Library since its inception in 2009, will be assigned to continue her work in Lumwana West. Her salary will be paid by the MOE.

With a generous grant from the local Rotary Literacy Committee, Librarian Sandra Kamulosu and retired Secondary School Headmaster Mbongo (Larry) Njolomba are updating the Memorial Library’s collection to meet the needs of its many community users. The Memorial Library is the center of literacy for the entire Lumwana West community, from pre-school to active aging learners who did not have prior education opportunities. Since school textbooks are distributed at the beginning of each class and collected again to be safely stored at the conclusion of the lesson, students do not have access to such texts to study outside of class. With solar powered lighting and a responsible collection of textbooks, the Memorial Library provides a welcome resource for after class studying.

EBZEF and Engineers Without Borders (EWB) have now combined efforts to support the reconstruction of the Science Lab three-classroom building. During EWB’s original construction a powerful storm blew the roof off, leaving it open to the elements. With the help of World Vision Zambia, construction will soon begin to replace the roof and complete the original construction. The next steps will be to supply the completed lab with furniture, lab equipment, and solar power to facilitate the needs of a functioning science lab. It could become the crown jewel of the new Lumwana West Secondary School!
