EBZEF Project Update #17

By Linda O. Bowers | Executive Director

Caren (EBZEF Scholarship Recipient)
Caren (EBZEF Scholarship Recipient)

EBZEF scholarship recipient, Caren, is a perfect example of how we support our students and protect your investment in their education as it carries them from secondary school to graduate programs. Caren graduated in 2024 from Levy Mwanawasa Medical University with a BS in Clinical Ophthalmology and is now beginning an advanced program to become an eye surgeon. Your support covered the costs of a medical license to practice ophthalmology, tuition, room and board, as well as advanced textbooks and essential equipment. What a remarkable accomplishment for an impoverished girlchild from a remote rural village in NW Zambia!

Lumwana West Secondary School boasts a 2025 enrollment of 356 students:  166 girls and 190 boys.  Classes just began on February 10th as a result of a major national curriculum change toward competency-based learning.  Teachers report that the new Science Centre “has changed the learning situation in Lumwana West.  Now learners have a direct observation on experimental lessons in science.  Lately the school has produced high grades in science that have seen pupils passing to the university.”

Pre-School (Early Childhood Development) attendance is also encouraging with two categories of learners: 3-4 yrs and 5-6 yrs. Basic School Headmistress Sandu reports, “We have three classrooms accommodating 45 children in each class making a total of 135 learners. 75 learners graduated to go to grade 1, and we have enrolled 75 new learners this year. 87 are girls while 48 are boys.”

The Pre-School Food and Garden Project continues with your support. Madam Sandu reports, “We have managed to grow 4 hectares of maize field. The field is about 10km from school. We found a fertile land where we involved community vulnerable women who helped us to cultivate. The maize is coming up green, and we are expecting a bumper harvest. The women were empowered; we gave them cash money which has improved their livelihood.” The rains are slowly returning as extreme drought begins to lessen.

Your support of EBZEF’s programs in the village of Lumwana West in NW Zambia is transforming the health, education, and well-being of an entire community. So little does so much to help so many on the other side of the world. Thank you!
