Children in Syria continue to bear the brunt of the crisis that will be marked by a grim milestone of ten years in March this year. The education system in Syria is overstretched, underfunded, fragmented and unable to provide safe, equitable and sustained services to millions of children. Inside Syria, there are over 2.4 million children out of school, nearly 40 per cent are girls. This number has likely increased in 2020 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic which exacerbated the disruption to education in Syria. One in three schools inside Syria can no longer be used because they were destroyed, damaged or are being used for military purposes. Children who are able to attend school often learn in overcrowded classrooms, and in buildings with insufficient water and sanitation facilities, electricity, heating or ventilation.
A high occurrence of child labor preventing school attendance by obliging them to leave school, or requiring them to combine school attendance with excessively long and heavy work as clarified in the Protection Monitoring Interactive Dashboard (65% of interviewed in Dana, 70% in Maaret Tamsrin, 74% in Afrin) sub-districts. Based on Multi-sector need assessment (MSNA 2021) the early marriage considered as negative coping strategy to respond for the worsening economic situation of families since the overall early marriage percent of interviewed (60% in Maraat Tamasrin for adolescents aged 12-17, 95% in Dana, 16% in Afrin) sub-districts.
As the fund is running low, MWL conducted many field visits camps located in Northwest Syria (Idlib governorate) and clarified about the tragedy situation starting from: Lack of Schools, High number of dropp-out children, protection concerns such begging, child labour, child marraige, aligned with other difficulties including lack of trained teachers and teaching materials such bags & stationery. Throughout other donations, MWL conducted many educationa and protection activities such:
1. Literacy and Numeracy program
2. Psychological Support sessions
3. Training teachers
4. Formal education sessions
5. Distribution of teaching materials
