This February, Camp for Peace Liberia enrolled 30 rural youths (14 males and 16 females) from 22 communities in Zorzor, Salayea and Belleh Districts in Lofa and Gbarpolu Counties in our professional agricultural program for nine months. Most of them are youths who had never had any educational opportunities. Some are single parents who held children in their teens, while others are youths whose parents died in the civil war when they were young.
On-campus, our students, staff, and volunteers live together and work together, learning the strategies for self-sufficiency based on organic farming and forming a just and peaceful community. We stress the importance of making the best use of locally available resources that lead toward the development of vibrant self-reliant rural communities.
Our students came with nothing, but they are now prepared to go back to their community with something. Below are stories they feel happy to share
How are you finding the program so far?
The program here is excellent and beneficial. I have learned more about agriculture. Besides learning, we students also help people in the community through teaching the knowledge what we acquire at school, such as pest control. I appreciate Camp for Peace for giving me this opportunity (Sarah).
What is your dream after graduation?
After graduation, I will continue my agricultural activities to earn money, so that I can continue my college education. Since I have nobody to help advance my knowledge, I will support myself through agriculture (Krubo).
After graduation, I want to make farms, but at the same time, pass my skills down to other local people, so that the community will benefit from improved food production (Mary).
Sponsors responses to our achievement
These success stories are not only from our students, but our benefactors also expressed their satisfaction. Below are some of their responses to our achievement.
Today I am proud that a portion of my hard-earned income can be used to change someone who felt they were nothing to become something (Ann).
There would have never been a better way to spend my money other than spending it on a cause that is producing results. I see my donation as a seed that has multiplied and is impacting a community that is becoming self-reliance and peaceful (Lois).
