Story of a determined Madhu: After the pandemic

By Debadutta Dash | Secretary, Sukarya USA

                                                                    Story of Madhu

Madhu, 8 lives with her parents and five siblings in a small tent of the Dalit Ekta camp, an urban slum of Delhi. Her father works as a daily wage laborer and her mother, as a housemaid. They live with poor means and all kinds of socio-economic vulnerability. Every day is a struggle for existence for them, especially during the pandemic, as her father lost his job as a daily laborer, and the entire family has been dependent on her mother’s meager income.

Madhu like any other normal child had always wanted to go to school but their poor financial condition was the barrier to fulfill this dream.

Her parents made her taking care of her siblings and household chores. But deep down in her heart, she was not happy. She developed a poor psychological state of mind being isolated and became an introverted child. Their parents noticed it, but they were helpless too.

As a turn of events, Sukarya’s Education on wheels [EOW] project team knocked at her door and her dream of learning became the reality. She got enrolled in this innovative education program with a structured curriculum. Since then, she turned out to be the most regular, attentive, and sincere pupil in her batch. She never missed any class and was very punctual. She became highly motivated and one of the most active girls in her batch

During Pandemic the EOW classes had to switch over to online sessions, which required an android phone. Her parents were unable to buy even a used phone, but this limitation did not deter her. She managed to club with a few of her classmates having access to mobile phones and continued to attend online classes every day.

Now, post-pandemic, things are getting back to normal, so in-person classes have resumed and she is attending it with all zeal and passion. She is faring very well in the monthly internal examinations and is very participative in life skills sessions and other extracurricular activities. She is all set to appear for the open basic examination [OBE] this academic session.

The third wave has not been ruled out, yet. With all these presumptions and uncertainties the EOW project activities have resumed with all prevention measures and strategies to meet the educational requirements and safety of children. The classes have been rolled out in both online and offline mode [hybrid model].

68 students of the previous batch have successfully cleared their OBE [Open Basic Examination] which is conducted by NIOS [National Institute of Open schooling]. These students are all set to get admission to government schools for their formal education.
