Environmental Education with Diphuti Students

Enjoying the game drive!
Enjoying the game drive!

Dear Supporters,

As you all know we take pride in educating students at Diphuti Primary School at the Oaks. We do environmental education with the children every second week and they love it. Their enthusiasm is just so great to watch. We decided that we will not only go out there and teach them about the environment and all the beautiful species South Africa has to offer, but that as a reward! We decided to take 14 students twice a year out to our reserve so they can go on a guided game drive.

We decided to take 14 students twice a year out to our reservation so they can go on a guided game drive.

On the 28 June, we took the first 14 learners, who were accompanied by a teacher from Diputhi Primary School, for a game drive. The kids went out for an hour and a half and they got to see different types of antelope and tree species. They also saw other small mammals like mongoose and tree squirrels. We were surprised by how much they had actually taken in from the lectures delivered back at the school!

After the game drive, the students came back to the GVI base and enjoyed lunch with the volunteers and the GVI staff team. This whole experience did not only put a smile on the children’s faces but it gave them a chance to physically see what we have been teaching them in the classroom. We are looking forward to having more of the students from the school come and see the animals that live only kilometres down the road from them.

Maamorare Day Care Centre

Recently we partnered up with a day care centre in a local town called Bismark. We are hoping to work alongside five women who are struggling to raise funds for building supplies.

On the 9 August, we will be participating in an army-style obstacle course to raise funds for these women. All monies raised will be used to buy materials to construct a new day care centre for them. Currently the children play in an open field with no secure shelter and where cattle can roam freely. All new donations will be put towards this project!

Thank you as always for your support, our positive impact would not be possible without you.

Best Wishes,
GVI South Africa
