Spring is here and the Community has sprung into action!

By Leah Brown | Base Manager

Dear supporters,

What a crazy three months it’s been here at GVI Karongwe…

First timers to Kruger National Park

September saw SANParks 12th Annual SANParks Week come and go. We made the most of the opportunity to take South African’s to national parks for free and rewarded eight children from Diputhi Primary School with a trip to Kruger. Most of these children had never seen an African Elephant, so you can imagine their surprise and excitement when they were faced with a big bull meters away from the car!

The Spring Walk!

In an attempt to raise further funds for our community projects, our brilliant community officer Faith, in conjunction with previous National Scholar Charmaine Mohlala, organised a Spring Walk. Close to 300 kids, teachers and parents from Diputhi Primary School took part in the 5km walk around their village, The Oaks, joined by GVI volunteers and staff. Amongst all the excitement the kids got slightly carried away and 2 hours later we had walked almost 10kms. Anyone would assume that after two hours of exercise in the hot sun, energy levels would be non-existent, but not for these children! To celebrate the finish line, the music was turned up and in true African style everyone enjoyed some vibrant dancing. A total of R2000 was raised from the event, an amount we are hoping to far surpass next year.

Thanks must be given to Charmaine, who’s passion for community engagement drove the initial idea and to Daktari for supporting us on the day. Faith and the team are looking forward to a bigger and better event next spring.

Mamoorare Creche commences construction

Thanks to your donations we have finally been able to start construction at Mamoorare Creche. Phase one of the project will commence this week with the digging of the foundations. We aim to assemble a perimeter fence and one classroom within the next three months. With the help of GVI staff and volunteers this is very much achieveable.

Thank you for reaching out to our community projects, your on going support has enabled us to provide education and much needed resources.

Much love,

Karongwe
