The food insecurity situation in southern Madagascar is deteriorating due to several factors, including poor weather conditions, drought, dwindling harvests, and food price inflation. According to the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis, more than 2 million people – in the southern and southeastern regions of Madagascar – are estimated to be in acute food insecurity, while half a million people are acutely malnourished.
To continue providing immediate relief, SEED is providing ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) to children with moderate acute malnutrition (MAM), along with unprepared food to families of 499 malnourished children in Fort Dauphin South. To further support longer-term resilience, SEED is building the capacity of 100 community health workers, and a total of 2601 household members, providing integrated hygiene activities, infrastructure provision, education sessions, and supplying soap to communities.
Only two months into the project, a total of 22,095 RUTF sachets have been distributed to children with MAM, and 16,400 kilograms of rice, 10,978 cups of beans, and 1,640 litres of oil have been distributed, supporting the 2601 household members of malnourished children.
SEED has also focused on building capacity of health centres and health workers: 100 health workers received training regarding identification and treatment of malnutrition, family planning, maternal and child health. Finally, to promote long-term resilience, SEED will support community health workers undertake outreach services to project participants, providing information and education on family planning.
SEED will continue to support immediate nutrition needs within communities, whilst transitioning the programme to build longer-term resilience in Fort Dauphin South, increasing communities’ abilities to withstand future shocks.
We would like to thank all that have contributed our Emergency Food Distribution Programme to date. Together, we have achieved a lot, but there is still more work to do!
