Situation Analysis of Refugees from Ukraine in Hungary: Report from Hungary #4

By Mai Yoshida | Director and Chief of Advocacy Team

A shelter at Slovakia-Hungary Border
A shelter at Slovakia-Hungary Border

It has been almost two months since we launch our emergency relief activity for Ukraine in Hungary, and our actions are now in full swing.

Our findings based on our field research are the following:

There is diversity among the refugee population, especially in economic terms,

Most of the refugees are heading to Western Europe, and it makes Hungary just a transit point

Certain people remain in Budapest

Those with financial difficulties remain near the Hungarian-Ukrainian border on the Hungarian side

Many more remain in Zakarpattya provinceof western Ukraine. (internally displaced people)

We have provided the following support, focusing on "people left behind."

  1. Providing food and daily necessities to help centers in border areas
  2. Supporting the livelihood of those who remain near the borders within Hungary
  3. Supporting the livelihood of those who remain in Zakarpattia Province of western Ukraine

1. Providing food and daily necessities to help centers in border areas

The help centers receive daily cross-border refugee arrivals from Ukraine. These help centers are often the first transit point for refugees in a third country, which provide refugee registration, hot meals, accommodation and rest, and medical treatment.

Terra Renaissance conducted interviews with supplies needs at these help centers and provided food and daily necessities to the Barabash and ZáhonyZahony help centers.

Terra Renaissance interviewed staff at these help centers for their supply needs and provided food and daily necessities at  Barabash and Záhony.

2. Supporting the livelihood of those who remain near the borders within Hungary

While most refugees head for Budapest and Western Europe, some remain in villages in the Hungarian-Ukrainian border areas with nowhere to go. Many of these people stay in the villages because they have financial difficulties, have no relatives in the city, have no guarantee of getting a job, or want to be near Ukraine. Residents provide these refugees with accommodation and meals, but there is a lack of support for host communities that support refugees.

Terra Renaissance, we interview these people once a week to support their lives. We also provided Ukrainian picture books, musical instruments, televisions, bicycles, etc., to educate and support the psychosocial children who are evacuating.

Terra Renaissance conducts weekly hearings with these people and provides livelihood support. We also provided Ukrainian picture books, musical instruments, televisions, bicycles, etc., as educational and psychosocial support for the children.

3. Supporting the livelihood of those who remain in Zakarpattia Province of western Ukraine

Zakarpattya Province, which borders Hungary, has seen a large influx of displaced people fleeing the ravages of war from central and eastern Ukraine. Currently, nearly 400,000 people are stuck in the region. Still, these people remain inside Ukraine because they are anxious to flee the country, lack documentation to cross the border, or for other reasons. The region has become a "left behind" area, with little interest from the media or aid agencies due to the lack of fighting in the same Ukrainian country.

Terra Renaissance has been helping to set up food distribution and support systems to support displaced people and host communities in these areas. For example, we provided refrigerators, freezers, and other equipment to set up kitchen points to serve food and financial assistance to purchase vehicles to distribute food.

Terra Renaissance will continue and intensify its support for the "people left behind" in the border region of Hungary and Zakarpattia Province of western Ukraine. Your support is essential to this effort. We would be grateful for your long-term support.

With deep gratitude,

Mai Yoshida, Terra Renaissance
