On March 28, a major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck near Mandalay in central Myanmar. A wide area was affected, particularly, people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups are placed in dire situations. AAR Japan, together with partner organizations, will distribute relief supplies such as food, drinking water, hygiene products, and mosquito nets. We also provide support to people/children with disabilities whom we have been supporting since before the earthquake occurred.
In addition to being one of the poorest countries in Asia, Myanmar has been in political and social turmoil since 2021, forcing people to live in harsh conditions. This earthquake has brought about a combination of poverty, social turmoil, and disasters, and the situation is particularly dire for people with disabilities and others who are vulnerable to disasters.
AAR Japan has been providing support in Myanmar since 1999. In addition to providing assistance to children and people with disabilities, we have also provided emergency support to the victims of Cyclone Nargis in 2008. We will use our past experience to provide prompt support together with our partner organizations.
AAR Japan had established an office in Myanmar even before the earthquake occurred and has been conducting support activities. We will provide not only emergency support immediately after the earthquake, but also afterwards to ensure that no one is left behind.
