More than a week has passed since the earthquake hit central Myanmar on March 28. In the Sagaing area, the epicenter of the earthquake, relief efforts have been delayed due to the collapse of roads and bridges and the blockage of many transportation infrastructures. AAR Japan (Association for Aid and Relief, Japan) Yangon office started distributing supplies in Sagaing city through local partner organizations, and an emergency support team dispatched from Tokyo arrived in Myanmar on April 6.
Many buildings have collapsed in Sagaing city. Sagaing Public Hospital, which has 200 beds, has also moved its beds to an outdoor site to treat inpatients and injured victims due to fears that its wards may collapse.
One of the victims who was receiving treatment said sadly, "I am grateful that we have food and drinks here, but I am in financial trouble because of the high cost of medicine. Even if I want to go home, my house is broken, and I don't have money to repair it".
Umbrellas are being provided free of charge from nearby stores to protect patients' beds from the sun and heat. On the other hand, the affected areas have been hit by heavy rain and strong winds since April 5, and there is a concern that the damage may spread.
The full extent of the damage caused by the Myanmar earthquake is still unknown. AAR's emergency relief team has entered the country and is working with local organizations to provide full-scale assistance.
We would like to ask for your cooperation in AAR's emergency support for the Myanmar earthquake.
