In the crowded lanes of Mumbai’s slums, where opportunities for girls are scarce, Kick Like a Girl (KLG) is breaking barriers through the power of football. Madhuri’s journey from a nervous young player to a confident coach—stands as a testament to the programme’s impact in empowering disadvantaged girls.
Four years ago, Madhuri stepped onto the field for the first time, surrounded by senior coaches and 30 eager young girls. Uncertain and hesitant, she found encouragement in her mentor’s guidance. Over time, she refined her skills, took on greater responsibilities and played a key role in structuring training sessions focusing on beginners while the senior coach worked with the U-16 team.
Her impact extended far beyond the field. She formed a deep emotional connection with her players, who would often ask in her absence, “Madhuri Di (Sister), when will you come back?” This bond underscored her role not just as a coach but as a mentor and role model.
Through OSCAR Foundation’s Kick Like a Girl project, Madhuri has emerged as a leader, proving that when girls are given opportunities, they rise beyond expectations. Her story exemplifies how sports can empower young girls in India’s underserved communities, instilling in them the confidence to dream bigger and achieve more. Madhuri’s journey is not just about football, it is about breaking stereotypes, creating opportunities and inspiring a new generation of girls to believe in their potential.
