Empower Students with Life-Changing Skills, Kenya

The Safal MRM Foundation has continued to provide services to communities despite the unprecedented challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The first half of 2021 has been very productive with a lot of activities making impacts across all four strategic pillars: Health, Education, Shelter and Environment.The Foundation repositioned itself by linking with other partners to invest in various solutions, helping communities adversely affected by the global pandemic in their rebuilding processes after several months of uncertainty.

The training offered at the Mabati Technical Training Institute is aimed at increasing employment opportunities for youth from vulnerable households to improve their income and enable them to realize their dreams.The training institute began a new calendar year on 14^th of June 2021 and currently a tof 525 students have enrolled for training in various courses: Electrical wireman, Electrical Fitter, Arch welding and Turning, Motor Vehicle Mechanical and Electrician, Dressmaking and Tailoring, Hairdressing and Beauty therapy, Motor Cycle repair maintenance, Plumbing and General fitting.

We are also delighted to report that all the 189 students who sat for the Government accreditation examinations administered by the National Industrial Training Authority from the 24^th of May to 11^th of June 2021 passed with flying colors and are ready to be absorbed in various industries.

 Thanks to your generous donation, we managed to purchase 15 new computers to equip our computer laboratory to allow students acquire skills in information and communication technology (ICT course). Since  the beginning of June 2021, a total of 126 students have enrolled for ICT training and are benefitting from the newly refurbished ICT facility. With additional computers, we expect to see increased numbers in the coming months. The training institute also introduced a new course in plumbing to diversify the current courses and increase opportunities for more youth.So far a total 62 youth have enrolled for plumbing and will be trained for the next 6 months. 

The teaching staff has also not been left behind when it comes to career enhancement and development. Two computer instructors participated in NITA computer hardware and maintenance course. The training will allow trainers to equip trainees with relevant skills to be able to access digital learning highly recommended during the covid-19 pandemic to reduce face to face interactions.

To improve the learning conditions for students, the training facility was given a new facelift by painting the classrooms and replacing all corroded pipes with new ones. The paint work was done by the students while Mabati Rolling Mills (MRM) donated paints and materials.

 A Majority of youth in Kilifi are directly or indirectly employed in the Motor Cycle transport sector, commonly known as “boda boda" riders.  Boda boda riders have been extremely crucial in serving the communities during the COVID 19 pandemic by offering delivery services, transport services and in some cases transporting patients to various health centres. This includes mothers bringing their children for immunizations at our Mabati Medical Health Centre. In the last 6 months, we are delighted to report that over 300 riders benefitted from road safety, financial literacy and ICT skills.

Other than providing quality skills training, we are delighted that your support has also enabled us provide daily hot lunch to all the  students enrolled at the Mabati Technical Training Institute . The lunch program has not only contributed to retention of students but has also provided high nutritional meals to youth who may not have  the previledge to access a balanced diet from their homes.
