“Empower through Education for Poverty Eradication”
Shaishav in support of Tribal Children of Dahod
Greetings from Team Shaishav and Adhar.
It is our pleasure to share some more experiences of our relentless efforts for educating children of remote tribal area of Dahod district of Gujarat state in India once again. The children we are working with in this area are children of migrant workers and many of them are first school going generation of their families. Our objective is to eradicate poverty from the district through helping these children for education and thus protect them from remaining unskilled labour workers when they grow up. We believe education can play a crucial role in empowerment of these disadvantaged children and make them sensitive and responsible citizens of the nation.
In last quarter, we conducted various activities including summer activities for children. As part of our regular activities, in last two months of the academic year we conducted number of interactive activities in village schools. Total 1585 children (759 girls and 826 boys) of 6 to 13 years of age from 6 villages participated in these activities. In addition, during summer vacation we also conducted summer vacation camps and Balmela (child seminars) for children to engage with different activities to develop skills and creativity among them. Total 1019 children (447 girls and 572 boys) from 5 villages actively participated in various activities including drawing on paper craft, making articles from waste material etc. Moreover they were also given orientation on Child Rights – Right to Life and Right to Development, Water management and waste management for Environment preservation.
People of our project villages belong to Bheel tribe. Through the survey we found that only 29% (187) of total children (634) of 14-18 years age go to the higher secondary school education. In fact the research revealed that the children here go for labour work in nearby city. While working there they also marry at very young age. Prevalence of child marriage is very high in this area. Early marriage deprive them from education and development and lead them to unskilled labour force forever. Girls are even in worse condition. Marriage at young age and early child birth increase the risk of malnutrition and maternal mortality rate among the girls. To combat this severe issue, Adhar organized a day long workshop for children and their parents in a school of Junapani village, Dahod. The objective was to create awareness about Child Marriage Prevention Act and sensitize the children and other people about the consequences of child marriage especially on the lives of children and girls in particular. In order to make this programme more effective officials from health department, education department and social justice department of the district were also invited. The programme was chaired by DEO (District Education Officer) who encouraged people to send their children to high schools. The village head of Junapani also raised the need of high school in the village itself so that children of the village can continue their education in village only. The programme was attended by 150 people – adults as well as children, who then were convinced to prevent child marriage in their respective villages and support the local authorities in their efforts of child marriage prevention.
In May 2016 Shaishav and other partner organizations had conducted three days workshop with state wide child collectives and discussed on the issues on the outcomes of Child Rights Audit which was conducted by the children themselves in their respective areas and villages. They also discussed about the follow ups and plan of action to address various issues prevailing to the children lives and their development as well.
Thus last quarter was quite intensive in terms of interacting with children as well as government bodies. And the movement is still on as we have a very long way to go……
We also take this opportunity to thank all of you who are supportive and helpful in our mission and movement of creating a child friendly society around us. Bye for now and will get back to you with new updates in next quarter
