“Empower through Education for Poverty Eradication”
Greetings from Team Shaishav and Adhar.
We are happy to share some of our experiences of our relentless efforts for educating
children of remote tribal area of Dahod district of Gujarat state in India. They are children
of migrant workers and many of them are first school going generation of their families.
Our objective is to eradicate poverty from the district through helping these children for
education and thus protect them from remaining unskilled labour workers when they grow
up. We believe education can play a crucial role in empowerment of these disadvantaged
children and make them sensitive and responsible citizens of the nation.
In last quarter we continued our activities in the schools by regular visits to the schools and
undertaking various interactive activities with the children at schools. These included
awareness generation about child rights and child protection as well as motivational
activities to develop leadership and creativity qualities among the children. Total 1321
including 638 girls and 683 boys children participated in various activities conducted at
In December 2015 a team of Shaishav organized two days leadership camp in a residential
school of Dahod district in which 254 children of 9 to 15 years from five villages
participated. The objective of this camp was to make the children aware of Child rights,
Difference between wish and necessity and also provide training of life skills and teach new
games with toys explaining basic principles and theories of science.
In January Adhar organized Republic Day Celebration on 26th January in which 123 girls
and 197 boys i.e. total 320 children of five villages participated in various competitions and
games and enjoyed the programme and learned the lessons of participation and
In February 2016, Shaishav team provided training to the organizers of Adhar about
project work. The training covered creative ways to educate various topics related to
consumer protection, freedom fighters and constitution. The training was organized to
make Adhar team familiar of aforementioned topics so that they can further educate to the
children of villages.
In addition,, various training material was provided to Adhar by Shaishav.
Apart from this, following the action plan prepared during state level child consultation
meet held in November 2015, ‘Child Rights Audit’ was conducted in 5 villages of Dahod
district. The exercise was done to identify the risks and issues affecting child rights and
child protection in the villages. The exercise was done by the children themselves. From
January till date 106 out of 200 forms are filled up and remaining would be completed by
end of March 2016.
