Marine Debris Education in Florida!

By Karisa Boyce | Director of Development and Blue Schools Program

Ocean Blue Project is engaging students from Florida to Oregon in outdoor ecology educational projects. In Florida, high school teacher Abi Carr led her students with intellectual disabilities in cleaning up a local beach. She utilized Blue Schools resources to educate her students about Ocean Currents and Marine Debris prior to the event and is dedicated to a brighter future and cleaner Ocean for generations to come.

In Oregon, urgan ecology projects give high risk youth new skills and healing. Youth housed at Oak Creek Correctional Facility in Albany, Oregon are providing plants for urban stream restoration project in their city and youth attending an alternative high school are planting alongside Ocean Blue director, Richard Arterbury. The New Beginnings Garden, Native Plant Propagation Program provides a platform for collaboraiton with local community partners like Ocean Blue, the juvenile justice system, and high risk youth. The youth involved in the program learn basic employment skills and are provided with more advanced training and skill building opportunities in horticulture and restoration work. This program is an experiential based model focusing on achieving skills through hands on work with plants native to the region. These skills are instrumental in changing the lives of the youth served.

With your support, Ocean Blue will be able to provide more service learning projects for youth in our Chapters across the US. Thank you for helping expand our reach and bring Blue Schools to younger students in the classroom. We are closer than ever to our goal and without you none of this would be possible.

Thank you for sharing our vision of a clean world Ocean!

Warm Regards,

Karisa Boyce | Director of Development and Blue Schools Program | karisa@oceanblueproject.org
