Virtual Lessons Launch in Sight!

By Karisa Boyce | Development Director

A strong team of dedicated volunteers have teamed up to get Blue Schools virtual classroom lessons online! With the support of Patagonia and Catchafire, a platform that connects professional volunteers with nonprofits, we now have a development team in place to complete lesson plans for K-12 students both in the classroom and at home.

As we speak, around 70 individual K-12 lesson plans are being developed and prepared for teachers and homeschoolers to connect students to their local watersheds and empower future stewards. Artists have come together to give life to illustrated characters who we hope will capture the hearts and scientists in all of our students for many years.

When the global pandemic took hold, Ocean Blue directors knew that we needed to offer STEM educational experiences and with Patagonia spreading the word about volunteer positions, we were able to build a team of volunteers who all care deeply about our one world Ocean. The Blue Schools Team members each have years of experience in the fields needed to collaborate and build an inspiring and educational program. Together, we will instill in our students the connection we all have to the Ocean we all share and how to take care of it for future generations.

We are just waiting to gather on the beach to film for the Blue Schools video that students will be able to watch in class, online, or at home, no matter how inland they may live. To give students of color a role model to look up to and help them see themselves in the spotlight, we will be starring people of color in the educational beach video.

Not every student's family is able to purchase a stainless steel water bottle or a reusable bag, items that many of us may take for granted. Being able to make water-friendly choices is sometimes not an option for folks who live on a tight budget, and for some of these folks educational opportunities may fall by the wayside due to busy schedules, which is why you are funding this program for a priority given to schools who have reported having 50% or more students who are economically disadvantaged. You are providing their scholarships!

With your support, we will be able to provide students with more than learning experiences that they will remember for a lifetime. We will also provide students with Ocean Survival Kits, complete with every day items that are reusable and washable, to replace any single use items they will no longer have to depend on.

We are so close to our goal, so spread the word or start your own fundraiser, and thank you for making the Blue Schools vision a reality!

Warm regards,
