Women from Kharkhari village in Gurgaon, Haryana, suffer from acute poverty. For the last few years, they have been planning to organize themselves into Self Help Groups (SHG) to sustain their livelihood. They approached Sukarya’s Spices and Cereal Unit, supported by its Economic Empowerment of Rural Women program, to become a part of the SHG. Thus, began a journey of transformation where 20 women members organized themselves into an SHG and started saving Rs 100/month as against the earlier no saving. With the program's help, they were able to get them the bank linkage from the nearest branch, where they had their SHG Savings Bank account. But no financial aid could be obtained through the bank. In the meantime, the program team organized a workshop on banking schemes for rural areas and trained them in preparing value-added products from the spices and cereals, which are processed, packed, and sealed in the unit. Going under the brand of ‘Saathi’ masala, the USP of the products is that the spices are unadulterated, made from premium quality raw material, and therefore of remarkably high quality, thus accepted widely. The products are produced under Women Empowerment Program and the funds are utilized for the upliftment of needy rural women. Buying a ‘Saathi’ masala, in turn, helps a woman earn and contribute to her and her family’s development.
