Progress Report

By Annie Peatling | Funding & Reporting | Zululand Conservation Trust

Dear GlobalGiving Family,

We are thrilled to share with you the remarkable progress made across our conservation projects in Manyoni Private Game Reserve, thanks to your generous support and unwavering commitment to wildlife preservation. Here's a detailed update on the significant achievements and ongoing efforts in each of our conservation initiatives:

Leopard Monitoring Project:

Our Leopard Monitoring Project continues to thrive, despite the challenges posed by habitat fragmentation and human-wildlife conflict. With the employment of our dedicated leopard trackers, Siboniso and Nkosini, we've witnessed a substantial increase in successful tracking and sightings, recording four separate leopard sightings by the end of 2023. In 2023 alone, we identified 10 different individuals through camera trapping, marking a significant milestone in our monitoring efforts. Through strategic investments, including the acquisition of 20 additional camera traps, we've expanded our monitoring capabilities, enhancing security not only for leopards but also for other important wildlife species within the reserve. Looking ahead, our focus remains on leveraging innovative monitoring techniques and strategic investments to contribute to the long-term viability of leopard populations in the Zululand region.

Temminck's Pangolin Project:

The Temminck's Pangolin Project has been instrumental in rehabilitating and releasing pangolins rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. With the collaboration of the African Pangolin Working Group and the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital, we've successfully reintroduced pangolins into Manyoni, contributing to their conservation at a regional scale. Despite challenges, including tragic losses like Bramley and Cori, our rehabilitation efforts have yielded heartening success stories. Notably, the discovery of pangolin pups on Manyoni Game Reserve signifies a breakthrough in conservation efforts, underscoring the importance of ongoing monitoring and conservation initiatives. We're also actively engaged in collaborative efforts with stakeholders to strengthen pangolin protection measures, ensuring the survival of these endangered species.

K9 Anti-Poaching Unit:

Our K9 Anti-Poaching Unit continues to play a pivotal role in protecting wildlife and combating poaching threats in the region. Through rigorous training and the addition of K9 Zigge, generously sponsored by Kilo 9 and the Wildhood Foundation, we've enhanced our protection capabilities. Thor, one of our tracking K9s, has demonstrated remarkable tracking skills, aiding in the successful recovery of lost pangolins and identifying active pangolin burrows. With the expansion of kennel facilities and the acquisition of a PAPA license, we've further bolstered our operational capabilities. We're immensely grateful for the support of our donors, whose contributions enable us to sustain and expand our conservation efforts.

Endangered Species Range Expansion:

Manyoni Private Game Reserve continues to serve as a vital sanctuary for endangered species, including African Wild Dogs and Temminck's Pangolins. Despite challenges such as wild dog escapes, we remain committed to balancing conservation needs while mitigating conflict. Our ongoing efforts, including the exploration of smart fence technologies like the LORA system, aim to create safe zones for endangered carnivores, ensuring their long-term survival in the region.

In conclusion, your support remains critical in sustaining our conservation initiatives and safeguarding the rich biodiversity of Manyoni Private Game Reserve. Together, we can ensure a future where endangered species thrive in their natural habitats. We deeply appreciate your continued partnership in our conservation journey.
