EXCITING ACTIVITIES FOR KAP's UNREACHED YOUTHS

ADDRESSING IDENTIFIED NEEDS IN CREATIVE WAYS
KAP's work is community education and counselling. Its core work for the Unreached Youths consists of participatory learning in workshops, groups- and one-on-one counselling sessions and activities that help them pass their new message and build their self-esteem. This happens over a period of about nine months (basic training) and one-year advanced trainings, if participants so wish.
Besides mental matters, in the course of our engagement each group shows to have its own practical needs.
Below some examples:

RE-USABLE SANITARY PADS
One need surfacing in all groups is poor menstrual health and hygiene, and young girls' and women's desire for modern sanitary pads.

The latter often being unaffordable, many girls admit to have 'sex for pads', despite all its consequences. The increased use of disposable sanitary towels has also shown to cause serious environmental pollution, due to the absence of adequate waste disposal.

KAP is truly grateful that KIPAWA (Kilifi PathWay with Kilifi Cares (KICA) was willing to travel all the way to Kitale to teach nine tailors (amongst whom also KAP Volunteers) how to produce re-usable sanitary pads.
Whereas this training and the materials were provided by other donors, your GlobalGiving donations have made their distribution possible. This entailed additional workshops for our female Unreached Youths in menstrual- and sexual health and hygiene, and in washing and maintenance instructions.
The girls and young women love it!
It has shown to address a big 'silent need' - they are very grateful and the demand for more is very high!

PARTICIPATORY EDUCATIONAL THEATRE (PET)
After working through personal psychological matters requiring healing, KAP's marginalised youths learn 'how to pass on the message' to others.
Building on skills learned in past years KAP also uses the PET approach in reaching out to others, especially those who are also difficult to reach. Examples are people living in very poor neighbourhoods, drinking dens but also markets and bus stops etc.
PET is participatory and strongly engages the public in identifying and 'solving' the problems and issues presented.

In collaboration with other donors, in the past year KAP trained a new group of 18 PET Facilitators, several of them earlier KAP-trained Unreached Youths Community Resource Persons (Volunteers).
GlobalGiving donations enabled us to have several great PET performances in hard-to reach areas, such as slum areas with high rates of brewing and drinking alcohol and other drug-abuse, HIV prevalence, teenage pregnancies, pollution and other issues addressed in our youths workshops.
NB. The old banner in the photos has recently been replaced by a real, beautiful backdrop!

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS POSSIBLE!
