Enhancing Education With Tree Ceilings

By Ernesto Rodriguez | Executive Director

Thank you so much for making our fall campaign successful.  I am especially grateful that in these difficult times 76 friends came toghether and raised $14,720 to improve the lives of kindergartners in the inner city.  Covid19 has disproportianetly affected the Latino and African American communities.  Your contribution will help 150 kindergartners and five teachers get back into the classroom and normalize being back in school.

Los Angeles County area schools are still closed due to the pandemic.  I have reached out to Para Los Niños and The Puente Learning Center.  We will coordinate ceiling installations once schools resume.  All indications point to sometime later this Spring.  I will keep you posted with the unfiltered stories that will come out of the kindergartners when we install.

But I want to leave you with the best thank you I have ever received.  While setting up to video tape a testimonial with our Mayor Anni Marshall at the City's preschool.  I was sitting on the floor setting up the camera angle.  It was the end of the school day and there was a young man drawing on the board, I figure 4 years old, waiting with his teacher to be picked up.  He turned to the teacher and asks, "Who's that guy?".  The teacher says, "He's the man who put the tree in the ceiling". At that moment the world paused, the teacher froze, noise stopped, and this little guys turns toward me, looks me in the eye and says "Thank You".  He then returned to drawing on the board and the world and ambient noise resumed.  I got teary eyed and my voice trembled, which you could hear on the practice tape.  But it wasn't until I got home that the full meaning and context of what had just happened hit me.  Best testimonial ever, from a 4 year old!!!!
