We would like to thank everyone who gave into our campaign that ended on 31st December 2019. We raised USD 5,417 from 179 donors, and earned USD 25 on day one of the campaigns from GlobalGiving and made USD 141 bonus day on 11th December 2019 and USD 500 from the last day of the campaign. The total amount of the entire campaign was USD 6,083 and after GlobalGiving fees, we received USD 5,255.57 on 29th January 2020.
Because of your generous contribution, we interviewed 38 youth and picked 18 to join our program in February 2020 up to May 2020. These youths are mainly from the neighboring Kibera slums but we also had to take some from other areas of Nairobi.
The new cohort started on 18th February 2020 with 9 girls and 9 boys. The orientation week was undertaken by former students who inducted them into the program with the help of Maureen the program coordinator. The classes officially began on 24th February 2020.
We are so happy to start the journey with these youths who are eager to be equipped, mentored and empowered. We would like to share briefly about two of them, Mutio from Kibera has been idle at home since she graduated from high school and got pregnant in the process and is now a single mother of one. On being selected to join Good Kenyan; she feels she has a second chance in life learning computers and entrepreneurship so that she can start a business and cater to her child. Kilonzo was born in Makueni County and was educated through high school by our partner Seeds for Hope can’t wait to meet his mentor and have an established lawyer walk him through the journey before joining the University of Nairobi to study law. Kilonzo’s role model is Governor Kibwana and he hopes to meet him one day.
We will keep sharing more of our students in the next reports.
We are currently recruiting mentors and if you are based in Kenya and would like to mentor, kindly email our mentor coordinator on mentoringcoordinator@goodkenyan.co.ke. If you would also like to volunteer any skill do not hesitate to get in touch with us at info@goodkenyan.co.ke.
We did not reach our campaign goal and we are kindly urging you to continue giving in to the campaign in order for us to reach and impact more youth. We urgently need more computers as we have only 5 functioning and training, 18 students, on them, it is a big challenge, we will be launching a computer campaign shortly. if you have a laptop that you do not use kindly email Lucy@goodkenyan.co.ke or humphreykayange@goodkenyan.co.ke and we will arrange for collection.
We look forward to a successful cohort impacting Kenyan youth.
God Bless you all
Good Kenyan Founders
