An Alternative Rite of Passage to FGM

By Mahnaz M. Harrison | Founding President and CEO of LM4D

In some communities Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is considered a rite of passage to womanhood,
making a girl marriageable as young as 8-9 years old. We have turned this cultural rite of passage for
women into a societal and legal taboo. We helped communities face down FGM by focusing on the girls’
rights to health and safety and addressing the importance of attending school and becoming fully
productive members of their communities.
Our brand LM4D is continuously recognized as the most effective anti-FGM force with a creative and all-
encompassing approach in the two Kenyan counties of Migori/Kuria and West Pokot. In total and to date
we have enrolled 2,750 girls in our program, none of whom have undergone FGM, sensitized more than
11,000 community members/parents, boys, and other stakeholders. We have rescued, housed, fed,
educated, and cared for 200 at-risk girls.
Since FGM was symbolic, we felt we needed to provide alternative and healthier symbolic acts to replace
the unhealthy ones. In honor of girls having been saved from FGM, we supported them in planting trees
in honor and celebration of their growth toward safety and health. The idea of planting trees for a forest
was welcomed by everyone and came from the local, drought affected, communities themselves. We
worked with local authorities and raised funds to honor every uncut girl in our program by planting a
tree. We gave each girl a certificate of achievement for keeping themselves safe and becoming a
champion against FGM. We now have forests in three communities we serve. They will not only help the
drought-stricken environment, but also, they are a strong symbol to represent a shift in attitudes and
behaviors of the community as they hear the resounding voices of the girls crying out not to be cut.
But of course, celebration is only the end of a long and arduous road toward ending FGM. Recently a
video journalist chronicled what LM4D has done to eradicate FGM in Kenya. Please watch our journey
here and know that it has been your generous support that helps us keep the girls safe and the
communities engaged in anti-FGM activities.
It is only with your support that girls can continue to celebrate their liberation from FGM. On behalf of
the girls dreaming of a better and healthier life, wask you to continue supporting our efforts. Some
of you have opted to be recurring donors, which brings us matching dollars from GlobalGiving.  A
million thanks from me, our team, and of course the girls, for supporting us.
