Vendor Week 2019: vendors and voluntaries

Hello!

We hope you are having a great day and would like to make an update on what has been going on with Mi Valedor since our last report. First and most importantly, big thanks to you for joining us in the run with your donation, everyone here appreciates it very much!

We are happy to announce issue 21, ¡Hola Vecinos! (Hello Neighbors!), was released. This was our second issue made entirely by our vendors and we happen to be very proud and happy with the wholesome result. They chose everything, from the title to the written content inside of the magazine, which revolved around life in community, neighborhoods and the sharing of space with other people.

An official and public presentation of this issue took place as well, where we assembled a discussion panel (as diverse as we could) to talk about this subjects from a street perspective. It consisted of two vendors (Juan Manuel and Toño), two members of the staff (Delphine and Santiago), the owner of the gallery in which we did the presentation (Carleti) and a writer that has collaborated with the magazine several times (Julián).

In other news, we're equally thrilled to share with you another public event we hosted, Vendor Week 2019. This is a worldwide event put out by the International Network of Street Papers (INSP), which we are a part of. The dynamic consists in vendors passing on their knowledge and personal experience selling a street publication to a group of volunteers. This year's was a particularlly proficient one, where we sold everything we brought with ourselves

Last but not least, we got to release issue 22, Retrofuturo (Retro-future), just a few weeks ago and it has been doing greatly! Benefits for the vendors and the company alike, something that we always aim for.

First live broadcast of 'The Voice of the Streets'

We hope you are having a great day and would like to make an update on what has been going on with Mi Valedor since our last report. First and most importantly, big thanks to you for joining us in the run with your donation, everyone here appreciates it very much!

We are happy to announce issue 20, La Gran Tenochtitlán (The Great Tenochtitlan), was released and has been not only a huge success economically but a vehicle for celebration of mexican culture for everyone involved. This fact lead to a rather ambitious presentation of the issue, an event which we decided to name Huateque Mixteque (Mexican Shindig).

This public event served as a sort of outlet for pre-hispanic traditions to take place but in a 'Mi Valedor style' and current context. In partnership with the independent space ATEA, we offered traditional aztec foods and beverages on a rooftop in the course of a saturday evening, paired with music. Perhaps the most important achievement was the first live transmission of La Voz de la Calle (The Voice of the Streets), a radio program hosted and driven by Mi Valedor's vendors, instructed by Andrés "Ruzo" Vargas from the radio platform Puentes.

In other news, we're equally thrilled to announce issue 21, Vecinos (Neighbours), is on it's way. The vendors themselves chose the theme and took part in lots of the content in it. Through various workshops (as usual) and guidance a very beautiful issue has come together and we are hoping to be able to share it with you in some form as soon as possible!

Last but not least, just a few weeks ago, the vendors got to attend the 16th edition of the Homeless World Cup, that took place in the Zócalo of Mexico City, where they luckily and by chance got to meet South Korea's The Big Issue editor in chief. The Big Issue is basically the street paper from which Mi Valedor first got it's idea to exist, so, interesting circle closing itself we guess.

Recording our podcast "The Voice of the Streets"

We hope you are doing great. We would like to update you on what's been going on at Mi Valedor since you helped us become part of GlobalGiving in the June accelerator.
Since June, we've released Issues 18 and 19 ('Trans' and 'Concrete Jungle'), and they're selling like hotcakes on the streets.
The editorial team and vendors are excited to announce that we are working on a second issue produced and edited by the vendors. They've now decided the theme of the issue: 'Neighbours'.

The vendors are currently honing their conceptual and photography skills through workshops and city walks; they are collecting photos to be featured in the December issue. In other workshops, editors and writers are working with them to produce all of the texts.

We had a transformative event in August, in which vendors taught volunteers how to sell magazines on the street. These events allow the vendors to associate with people from all walks of life, while also allowing the general public to understand just how hard it is to do their job.

We visited the famous churro shop 'El Moro', to learn how these delicious Spanish-style pastries are made. "This is the best breakfast of the year," said Erasmo, after taking one bite. We were also taken on a guided tour of the Anthropology Museum, as part of the preparations for the 'Pre-Hispanic' issue, which comes out in October.

Finally, we earnt a scholarship to Glasgow, the venue for this year's International Network of Street Papers (INSP) Convention. At the end of August, Maria, director and editor of Mi Valedor, joined staff from 42 other street publications to discuss how to help homeless and vulnerable sectors around the world using street papers. Every year, we compete in the INSP Awards; this year, we were nominated for six awards and are the proud winners of 'Best Cover' and 'Best Online Presence'.

We've been able to continue the hard work thanks to your contribution! If you'd like to become a recurring donor, you could help us reach even more people who want to get off the streets. Especially if you become one this September 12, when all donations will be boosted and we could take home part of the $50,000 incentive fund provided by GlobalGiving.
