An African Update

By Action Change Team | Community Team

Hello!

The "Fight for LGBTQ+ Rights in Africa" project has made significant strides in advocating for and advancing the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals across the African continent. Thanks to your generous support, we have been able to expand our efforts, engage with key stakeholders, and provide resources and training to marginalized communities. This report outlines the progress made, key achievements, challenges encountered, and future plans to further strengthen LGBTQ+ rights in Africa.

Over the past few months we have been focusing more on the community engagement element of our program and this is also due to a slow down in funding.

Community Empowerment

  • Capacity Building for LGBTQ+ Activists: We conducted workshops and training sessions for LGBTQ+ activists, focusing on building leadership skills, legal literacy, and effective advocacy strategies. This empowered local leaders to advocate for themselves and their communities, even in environments that may be hostile.
  • Psychosocial Support Services: Recognizing the mental and emotional toll of living in a hostile environment, we provided confidential counseling services and mental health support to individuals affected by discrimination, violence, or social exclusion.

C. Public Awareness and Education

  • Media and Public Campaigns: Leveraging both traditional and digital media, we ran educational campaigns on LGBTQ+ rights, aiming to shift public perception and reduce stigma. These efforts have contributed to greater understanding of the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in Africa.

We have seen how our project is really essential to people across Africa and also the need for confidentiality and for this reason we have adopted a policy for no images to be taken, support groups are to hold limited information on attendees and we ensure we are using secure and safe spaces to protect our team and our community.

Thank You
