Introducing ABCS and RiCE CANADA!

By Sharon Terada | Board Member, ABCS and RICE CANADA

Hard at work!
Hard at work!

A few months ago, we wrote to you about the good work and generosity that our dedicated friends from Australia had provided in the fall of 2017.  Now we wanted to let you know about our Canadian volunteers!

As you may know, our founding director, Tammy Durand Pomroy, is from the Sudbury region in Ontario, Canada.  In 2009, while vacationing in Cambodia, Tammy was struck by the need to provide food and education for the most needy children in Siem Riep.  She returned home to Canada, sold all of her belongings and was able to raise enough money for a one way  airplane ticket back to Cambodia.  With only a few hundred dollars in her pocket and with great effort she was able to erect a hut and she began to teach a few orphans.  ABCS and RICE was born!

Her friends and family back home in Canada decided to hold fundraising dinners to help support Tammy’s efforts.  These events grew over time.  Over the past several years ABCS and RICE CANADA has grown to include a dozen concerned men, women, and students.  Several of us have had the privilege to visit ABCS and RICE in Siem Riep Cambodia and we are all so inspired by what Tammy has achieved.  Last April 2017 our local Dinner and Silent Auction hosted 135 attendees and raised nearly $24 000 CDN.  We were so proud when Tammy was presented with the Sovereigns’ Medal for Volunteers which was awarded from the office of the Governor General of Canada, the Right Honourable David Johnston.

We were also excited a few months ago when ABCS and RICE was featured in the December/January issue of “Our Canada”, a nationally distributed magazine.

We look forward to holding another fundraising dinner this April 2018.  Stay tuned for more good news!
