A Bright Start: Caleb Foundation's Daycare Program

We needed you and you were there. Together, we are making a difference!

Dear Friends and Family of Caleb Foundation,

We’re writing to provide you with an update about the impact you’ve made since the last report. We hope you enjoy learning about our work and continue to stay engaged with our team.

No word is powerful enough to express our appreciation for you. Thank you for standing with us on saving lives and making a long-lasting impact on the lives of thousands of destitute children. We are so thankful and grateful to have you on our side.

 As you remember, during Covid-19 last year, we started an urgent appeal to support 450 households in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia who were struggling to put food on the table during the pandemic. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to provide meals for more than 1,000 families since we started this campaign. This couldn’t have been done without your help. Thank you for your support during these difficult times. We are glad things are now getting better, and some of our beneficiaries are going back to work. At Caleb Foundation, we strongly believe in long-term self-sustaining solutions. Therefore, we are devising different strategies to help our underprivileged families stand on their feet once and for all.

 Although Caleb Foundation has supported most of our beneficiaries to go back to work and provide for their family, some of our beneficiaries with toddlers were unable to return to work due to a lack of affordable daycare services in Ethiopia. A recently published government report shows that maternity is one of the root causes of homelessness among women. Low-income mothers are obligated to beg on the street after they give birth because nobody can watch their kids while they work. To address this problem, Caleb Foundation reopened the free daycare service which was closed during the start of the pandemic. In our free daycare service, we take care of children so that their mothers may go search for work to provide for their families. That way, mothers can sustain their families in the long run by finding a steady source of income.

 Another problem we encountered recently is feeding our children. Some parents would drop their children off with no food for the day due to a lack of provisional funds. Therefore, some children would be left hungry while other kids who had food would be able to eat. To address this problem, we set aside money in our budget to provide food for all children at our daycare. This program has also created a few jobs opportunities such as cooking and dishwashing for some of the underprivileged mothers.
