Dear Friend,
Greetings from West Pokot!
We are delighted to share the latest progress update on our impactful project, but being this our first report, we would like to share with you some additional information about this remote Kenyan County as well as giving you a bigger picture of our work in that region.
West Pokot, in fact, is an area prone to frequent and severe environmental shocks caused by climate change. These shocks have had devastating effects on the livelihoods of rural communities, resulting in food and nutrition insecurity, erosion of livelihoods, decreased crop production, and loss of livestock.
Since 2019, we have been eyewitnesses to the consequences of these environmental disasters and how much they have affected the pastoral and agro-pastoral communities in the region.
Through our fieldwork during these years, alongside the most vulnerable families in West Pokot, we have been trying to diversify livelihoods, promote NSA and climate smart agriculture, improve access to water and enhance food security. Your generous support will enable us to make an even significant strides towards improving the lives of these communities.
During this time, we have worked in different sector, we would like to give you a short summary about our activities and the goal achieved.
Modern Beekeeping
To support the beekeepers in West Pokot, we have constructed, in 2022, a honey processing unit. This facility has already enabled them to process and package their honey efficiently, enhancing its market value. Additionally, the community itself has established a beehives carpentry to promote local craftsmanship and ensure the availability of quality beehives for future beekeeping endeavors.
We have provided training on modern beekeeping techniques to local beekeepers in West Pokot. Additionally, we have distributed already 450 modern beehives to these beekeepers, empowering them to establish sustainable honey production. This initiative not only helps in income generation but also contributes to environmental conservation and biodiversity.
Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture and Drought-Resistant Seedlings
We have conducted training sessions on nutrition-sensitive agriculture for 100 farmers in West Pokot. These training sessions focused on sustainable farming practices, crop diversification, and the utilization of drought-resistant seeds. By equipping farmers with the necessary knowledge and resources, we aim to improve their agricultural productivity and enhance their food security.
Water Points
To address the water scarcity issue in West Pokot, CEFA wants to construct five water points in five different villages. These water points not only will provide access to clean water for households but also cater to the needs of livestock, crucial for the communities’ livelihood. Improving access to water significantly contributes to the resilience of communities during periods of drought and decrees the risk of conflict over the control of natural resources.
Our bigger aim is to create a model of sustainable development for the communities in the West Pokot, promoting equal access to resources as well as building resilience to climate change.
Join the transformation and contribute to CEFA's ongoing assistance to West Pokot communities! Your support is crucial in sustaining our efforts to deliver beekeeping, NSA and drought-resilient crops trainings, promote sustainable agriculture practices, construct water points and cattle troughs, establish a resilient tree nursery, and procure drought resistant seeds, seedlings and equipment for the benefit of our local farmers.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering support and belief in our mission.
Together, we can create positive change and uplift these communities towards a brighter future.
With warm regards,
Irene
