Fund Hearing Test for a Struggling Child in Africa

Introduction 

Due to lack of funding or access to resources such as hearing aids, glasses or treatment centres, children are facing learning difficulties and are often bullied due to the lack of education and awareness around the issue. In South Africa around 3.5M children facing vision and hearing impairments and for a country facing intense poverty and inequality this is an issue that is predominantly affecting the poorer communities.

Families are often unaware of their challenges making it hard to reach out for help or solutions. The stigma associated with any sort of impairment is another reason why families often don't ask for help or report it to the schools. Many families also lack the funding and access to resources to deal with the impairment, leaving children to struggle.

We will provide outreach programs through schools in rural and disadvantaged communities to test children for visions and hearing impairments. This will help us identify the students in need and build awareness with teachers and other key community leaders around the signs children with these disabilities will show, to ensure all children are receiving the correct help and assistance to boost their confidence and keep them on track with their education.

Can you believe it has been 3 months since we last spoke! We are thrilled to share an update on the impactful project you generously support. Your contributions are making a difference in the lives of children facing vision and hearing challenges in South Africa.

Over the past few months through outreach programs in rural and disadvantaged communities, we conducted vision and hearing tests for children as a result teachers and community leaders are now more aware of the signs of these disabilities, ensuring early intervention. After testing each child our team refers all the children that failed to the right medical services, these services sometimes are free but the families can’t afford a day of work or the transport cost to take children. Your donations have enabled us to provide life-changing hearing aids and glasses to children and our team works with each family to ensure we get the child the support they need. This includes our team making and taking the children to appointments or covering transport costs. If through further testing these children need glasses or hearing support then we have been using your donations to make this possible! 

Children with adequate vision and hearing perform better in school, reducing inequalities they face daily. By including them in the development process, we empower them economically and reduce dependence. Improved vision and hearing boost children’s confidence, enabling them to participate fully in their education and you are a part of this.
