Getting Dogs Off Chains

Butter, before and after
Butter, before and after

Dear Friends of dogs in need,

While Guardians of Rescue responds to many types of situations involving animals in trouble, getting dogs off chains and tethers is an ongoing, non-stop Guardians project. We do as much as the law and the dogs' "owners" will let us do to upgrade the dog's life. This includes getting the dog surrendered so that we can find him/her a better home, persuading the "owner" to let the dog come inside the home, or if those options are not possible, building an enclosure with an insulated doghouse so that the dog can at least be free and protected to that degree. We often are dealing wth resistant people in dangerous areas, so these negotiations take tact and persistence.

We get these calls constantly, and the past three months have been no exception. Here are some examples of the good we have been able to do with the help of caring people like you:

One dog you helped is Butter.  Guardians had given Butter a doghouse at the end of last Winter. The “owner” was very resistant to letting us help this dog any further because he was having conflict with his neighbors over the dog’s circumstances and he did not want to give them the satisfaction of giving in to their concern for his dog. Butter became a victim of this feud and remained on a chain. When the shutdowns hit, fortunately for Butter the owner no longer wanted to be bothered with the situation. We were able to get Butter surrendered and she is now living with a family of four and living the life of luxury she deserves.

Chico, now named Charlie, sat on a chain for five years in the very bitter cold and the sweltering heat. It was hard to even get anywhere near him. We think he just gave up on people because people had let him down for so many years. His “owner”, fearing him, would push balls to him with a long stick. We finally got him surrendered this Summer. He is now living with a new dog mom who adores him, and he has never shown a sign of aggression again. Amazing what love will do.

Looking at Byron’s face you can see how sad he looked while he was chained. To his “owner” he was a nothing more than a breeding machine. It took two years for us to get this dog rescued, but now he is safe and in a new loving home, and is doing great.

Then there’s Remington. His keeper at the very best would give this dog food and water three times a week. Although this neglect was documented, neither the police nor the local SPCA could do anything. Poor Remington was infested with ticks and fleas and needed a lot of TLC. Guardians were recently able to secure a surrender, and now he’s also living the loving life all dogs should have.

The need to help dogs like Butter, Chico, Byron and Remington will never end, but as long as there is a Guardians and people like you, we will keep helping them, as many as we can, as fast as we can.

Together we save them,

All of us at Guardians of Rescue
