For 17 years, Darjeeling Children's Trust and its supporters have been improving lives of vulnerable children in Darjeeling. This has included building a new children's home. We now need to equip the dormitories, staff accommodation, water harvesting and IT facilities. When these tasks are complete, and when we have a safe, warm and happy home for the children, we can turn our full attention to funding their education, vocational training, health and well-being - physical and mental.
Our challenge is to provide, equip and maintain a healthy space for children, giving them safety and a place in which to flourish. Water supply is a continuing problem in the town. Without DCT's help there would be insufficient water storage in the children's home to meet demand. We also need to provide new beds, bedding and furniture for the new home. But we also need to equip our children with the education and life skills which will allow them to flourish when they leave us.
Having built the new home, the next stage is to replace thin, uncomfortable mattresses for all the children; to replace old furnishings and to guarantee a dependable water supply. Our work, made possible by supporters from around the world, provides a home and safe space for the children, allowing them to achieve their potential. With excellent, fully-equipped accommodation now within reach we want to ensure the children are well equipped to progress from education into work.
Each year, children living at the Home will have the opportunity to study in a supportive, modern environment in order to pass the exams so vital for getting a good job. They will live healthier lives so that their school attendance record will improve. They can then realise their dreams and enjoy more options for their futures. Decades after we are gone, families in Darjeeling and beyond will doubtless be grateful that people they never met enabled them to rise from modest beginnings.
