Dear supporters,
Since the beginning of March, the entire world and Mexico is being affected by a pandemic crisis and our grantee partners are experiencing high levels of uncertainty, because of the effects on girls and women.
Conditions have been particularly dire for migrants locked up in detention centers or camped in informal settlements in unsanitary conditions. Many shelters are full or have to turn people away for risk of infection among other residents. Groups are working together to tackle this unprecedented situation, building networks of and support at the local level. Fondo Semillas is constantly monitoring their efforts and has responded with rapid relief funding.
Even though the situation, the women and girls supported by this project increased their knowledge of human rights thanks to the work of our grantees. They became more informed and empowered to make decisions for themselves and their families and to demand the fulfillment of the rights in the migratory process.
For example, Desarrollo Humano A.C. implemented a sports workshop that also helped girls learn about their rights, especially in relation to their bodies and the right to live free from violence. As a result, the girls have started their own basketball team called, ‘the Queens’.
In that way, children and young people are able to express their rights and be heard by adults, including their families. La Red de Mujeres del Bajío organized an activity where young people were able to talk with their parents about their needs and fears in a safe and supportive environment.
A key result of this project is that many migrant women and young people became change-makers to fight for the rights of other children and young people.
We are aware of the challenges and difficulties, the women and communities will encounter in the coming years; however, we are confident in the ability of women-led grassroots organizations and the feminist movement to respond creatively and effectively to this crisis.
Thanks to continue supporting us and advance women's rights in Mexico,
Fondo Semillas team
