Our lockdown lions are thriving, with your support
As we head into what is the winter season in South Africa, our four lions are continuing to thrive in their sanctuary home, thanks to your generous support.
Bellone, Angela, Louga and Saïda spent most of their lives as part of a circus, living in cramped beast wagons and being forced to perform for the crowds. Thankfully, the circus owner decided to surrender the lions, after he was attacked by Louga, and in 2022 Born Free gave them a new lifetime home at our Big Cat Sanctuary at Shamwari Private Game Reserve.
Since arriving at our sanctuary, the dynamics of the small pride have changed slightly, which is somewhat expected with rescued lions, once they have settled into their new environment.
Saïda remains the most dominant lion but will now express that more visibly to show that she is the boss, with the odd snarl and paw swipe – as may be seen within prides of lions living in the wild.
The other three lions – lionesses Bellone and Angela, and castrated male Louga, respect that Saïda is the most dominant pride member and don’t try to challenge her.
The bond between the four lions is as strong as ever though, and we often see the four of them lying close together as they soak up the sun in the shorter days, and Angela and Bellone often greeting each other with head rubs.
Just over a year after the lions of lockdown arrived at Shamwari Private Game Reserve, Glen Vena gives us an insight to the personality of Louga, the male of the group: “Louga is such an interesting character, I observe him rubbing his head against tree stumps, rolling around with his legs in the air on sunny mornings. Generally, he is in his element here and looks very confident and contented.”
Providing the lifetime loving care these four lions need doesn’t come cheap, and we are so grateful to you for your support. To look after our four Lions of Lockdown for just one week costs £768, or £3,332 per month, so we really do appreciate every donation we get!
