Vocational Training at the Kaliyachak Girls' Learning Centre

The FORRAD team recently visited the Kaliyachak Girls' Learning Centre, including the vocational training unit which is teaching girls and young women tailoring skills. The trainees are intensely focused as you can see in the pictures from their visit that we've included with this report. You'll find the impact of this skills training evident in the profile of Sukanti Kumari, one of the students who was enrolled in the training program in 2023.

Sukanti

Sukanti, from Aganu Bigha village, attended the  tailoring classes conducted under the Shiksha Setu skill building program for teenage girls and young women,  for 3 months from July to September 2023. During this period, Sukanti learned to stitch shirts, blouses, saree petticoats, frocks for children, salwar kameez, nightgowns, pajamas and bags. She bought her own sewing machine and began stitching garments for herself and her family members.

Early this year she got married and moved to Hilsa to live in a joint family with her husband and in-laws. She is able to earn pin money for herself by stitching garments for people in her neighbourhood. She charges a little less than the commercial tailors in order to build her clientele.

She has continued with her studies and is now in the final year of her B.A. in history through distance learning. Her husband is also studying and works as a small-holder farmer.

Thank You for Your Support!

The Kaliyachak Girls' Learning Centre has more than 140 students enrolled.  The Centre operates with support from donors like you. Your support helps these girls and young women gain an education as well as the skills to contribute meaningfully to providing for their families.

On behalf of the Centre's staff and students, thank you!
