In April and May 2015, two major earthquakes in Nepal killed nearly 8,000 people, injured 10,000, and affected 8 million across the country. The Global Fund for Children is mobilizing funds to support five grassroots organizations that are bringing emergency relief and ongoing support to vulnerable Nepalese children and their families. As trusted community resources, these organizations are uniquely positioned to identify and fulfill critical needs.
Our grassroots partners serve children who were already vulnerable before the earthquakes, including orphaned and abandoned children, survivors of sex trafficking, and children living in prison with their parents. The earthquakes have exacerbated their fragile circumstances as communities across the country struggle to find food and shelter. Damage to schools, orphanages, and homes, along with interruptions in education and healthcare, contributes to the children's increasing vulnerability.
GFC's local partners are already providing children and families with tents, clean water, food, transportation, and blankets. Once immediate needs have been met, we will direct funds toward rebuilding schools and our grassroots partners' facilities. Ultimately, this project will help our partners resume their regular programs and adapt these programs to support the children's long-term recovery through services like psychosocial counseling, medical care, and school reintegration.
Our partners are deeply committed to transforming children's lives for good by ensuring that they are safe, educated, and healthy. This project will greatly increase the likelihood that these organizations can continue to provide life-changing services well into the future. Our partners will also benefit from our capacity-building support and networking opportunities, which help them emerge as stronger organizations that are better prepared for future emergencies and reach even more children.
