Highlights of Current Situation:

  • 2.1 million people are affected among whom 1.4 million people need assistance
  • An estimated 112,500 children under the age of five are at risk of acute malnutrition
  • An estimated 806,000 people need food assistance urgently
  • 175,509 displaced people are still living in 307 temporary shelters, of which 86 are schools
  • 1663 schools are damaged and nearly 150,000 are children out of school

CARE Haiti ‘s Response:

  • FOOD: Despite the difficulties to find seeds in Haiti, CARE will be able to distribute bean seeds and sweet potato cuttings by the end of November. Sweet potato cuttings can be planted until December.
  • LIVELIHOODS: To date, CARE has realised cash transfer related to cash for work for 11,797 beneficiaries in the Sud’Est and Plateau Central Departments. Cash-for-work beneficiaries work ten days a month, realising mainly community or social works.
  • EDUCATION: Six partially-destroyed schools in Grand’Anse have been selected by CARE. CARE will rebuild the roofs and rehabilitate existing sanitation facilities in these schools. The ten sites to set up child-friendly spaces have been identified, the needed materials bought and the staff recruited. Training sessions on psychosocial support for teachers started this morning. Through its partner CAFT, CARE has started to organise psychosocial support training sessions to enable teachers to support children in overcoming the hurricane
  • VILLAGE SAVINGS & LOANS ASSOCIATION: CARE is also planning to support the most affected VSLA group members through grants. CARE has conducted an assessment on 492 VSLA groups to determine the impact of the Hurricane Matthew. Results of the assessment should be available by the end of this week.

Thank you for your continuous support for CARE, please share this message to continue helping us to support the long-term restauration of people in HAITI.
