We just got a call from Rose Cunningham. She's the leader of Wangki Tangni, MADRE’s sister organization in Nicaragua, and she’s worried. That's because a group of locals have started gold mining at Mocon beach, right next to the Harvesting Hope gardens.
“They are using mercury in the gold mining process,” Rose told us. "That risks of contaminating the nearby soil and water.” Rose and the Indigenous women farmers worry that their fruit and vegetable harvests will be harmed.
Rose has reached out to the miners. She hopes to convince them to move their work further away from the water supply to lessen risk of contamination. And they are putting a plan in place to ensure the safety of their crops. She told us that she will keep us posted of any developments as they come. We’ll be sure to share them with you.
Meanwhile, here is a photo from a recent farmers market where the women farmers sell their produce.
