Challenge

The problem is limited access to health insurance in Nigeria. Only 30% of Nigerians have health insurance (Alex E. Asakitikpi 2019). The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS 2014) says 71.67% of Nigerians rely on out-of-pocket payments for health care, which requires cash at hand and is expensive. As a result the hardest hit are poor widows and their orphan and vulnerable children and as a result, they have limited access to quality health care.

Solution

This project will solve this problem by covering the cost of 200 widows and orphans health insurance premium for 12 months at a cost of $50 US dollars for the cost of annual premium for one widow and their orphaned children. This will give widows and their orphans access to quality health care which includes basic health care (such as treatment for malaria, typhoid and diarrhea), surgery and eye care at hospitals. In addition the widow and orphans will be able to see a specialist doctor.

Long-Term Impact

The potential long term impact of providing annual health insurance for 200 widows and their orphan and vulnerable children are listed below 1.Improved access to quality health care 2.Reduction in the use of out-of-pocket funds for the payment of hospital bills 3. It will save the lives of widows and orphans because it will increase their life span 4. It will improve the quality of life and standard of living for 200 widows and orphans
