Additionally, WEWE Executive Director, Dr Josephine Ogazi, also donated a total of N100, 000 to the Ministry of Women Affairs in support of this year’s annual event. According to her, WEWE is also working with some other sister organizations towards improving the vulnerability of widows through raising awareness about their problems so as to attract the attention policymakers. The women also received food items and clothing.
June 23 every year is observed as the International Widows’ Day, a day set aside to commemorate the event and draw attention to the plight of widows. The event also aims to gather support for widows and to spread awareness about their situation.
For several women, the loss of a partner is magnified due to the long-term struggle for their basic rights and dignity. The theme of this year’s International Widows Day was "Invisible Women, Invisible Problems."
