Report:                       Report on Health Insurance for 200 Widows and Orphans in Abuja

GlobalGiving             Project No. #48816

Period:                       April 14, 2024 – August 15, 2024

Reported By:             Widows and Orphans Empowerment Organization (WEWE)

Date:                          Thursday, August 15, 2024

Widows and Orphans Empowerment Organization (WEWE) has raised a total of USD$9,350.21 from 118 donations for health insurance for 109 widows and orphans over the past three years and nine months (September 23, 2020 – August 15, 2024). The main goal of WEWE’s project hosted on the GlobalGiving website is to raise USD$50,000 to provide health insurance for 200 widows and orphans in Abuja, Nigeria, to access healthcare services. WEWE has successfully reached over 50% of our target.

In these five (5) months reporting period from April 14 to August 15, 2024, WEWE received a total of N595,000 (USD $374.21) in cash donations from individual philanthropists within Nigeria. However, there were no donations from WEWE’s crowdfunding page hosted on the GlobalGiving website during this period. The funds received were used to provide healthcare services for two beneficiaries and to support a widow's business, enabling her to generate income to cover her household needs.

During this five (5) month's reporting period (April 14, 2024 – August 15, 2024), WEWE provided healthcare services to three (3) beneficiaries, including one widow and one orphan who received healthcare support, as well as one widow who received business support. This was made possible by donations from individual philanthropists. In total, WEWE has now supported 109 beneficiaries.

In the last quarter, WEWE provided health insurance for a total of 106 widows and orphans, distributed across the years as follows: 55 in 2021, 26 in 2022, 16 in 2023, and 12 from the beginning of 2024 until the present. This insurance provider covers National Government Insurance and Direct Private Health services.

Below are the names and details of the beneficiaries within this reporting period

Mrs. Grace is one of the three (3) beneficiaries who received healthcare support during this reporting period. Mrs. Grace was diagnosed with appendicitis and underwent surgery. The immediate surgery incurred an out-of-pocket expenditure of 415,000 (Four hundred and fifteen thousand Naira only), approximately USD$261.01.

Master Fidel is the second beneficiary to receive support during this reporting period. He is an orphan and a son of Mrs. Omale, a widow beneficiary from WEWE. Master Fidel developed wounds on his foot and was referred for an X-ray, which revealed that he had a foot ulcer. He is currently undergoing treatment. The out-of-pocket expenditure for the X-ray was N10,000 (Ten Thousand Naira Only), which is approximately USD$6.29.

Mrs. Josephine is the third beneficiary who received support during this reporting period. Mrs. Josephine is a widow with three children and a beneficiary of our current private health insurance, Reliance Health Maintenance Organization (HMO). WEWE provided business support to Mrs. Josephine with an industrial blender valued at 170,000 (One hundred and seventy thousand Naira only), approximately USD$106.92, to open a fruit juice production business to sell fruit juice in small bottles to generate income to provide nutritional food for her three children and school fees for their growth and wellbeing.

WEWE has successfully provided healthcare services for 109 widows and orphans in Abuja, Nigeria. The following are the details of the beneficiaries registered under the Group, Individual, and Family Social Health Insurance Programme (GIFSHIP) program, private healthcare insurance scheme, private healthcare services, and Mrs. Josephine, a widow, who received business support from inception to date.

From November 18, 2020, to November 17, 2021, WEWE enrolled 55 beneficiaries, registering the first participants into Health Insurance with Venus Medicare Ltd.

Between May 4, 2022, and May 3, 2023, WEWE enrolled 26 beneficiaries, constituting the second group of participants registered with the GIFSHIP.

WEWE registered 12 beneficiaries from January 1 to August 16, 2023. These individuals represent the third group of new beneficiaries benefiting from direct healthcare services pending the conclusion of their registration with the Government Health Insurance Scheme.

From August 18 to December 15, 2023, WEWE registered four (4) beneficiaries. These individuals received direct healthcare services within this period.

Between December 15, 2023, and April 12, 2024, WEWE registered nine (9) beneficiaries. These beneficiaries were recorded as those registered with a private insurance scheme called Reliance HMO Insurance scheme.

From April 13, 2024, to August 14, 2024, WEWE supported 3 groups of beneficiaries who received direct healthcare services and business support during this period.

Challenges and Mitigation

There were no challenges during this reporting period because widows and orphans are getting direct healthcare services.

Conclusion

As of August 15, 2024, WEWE has enrolled 109 beneficiaries out of the 200 widows and orphans with support from 118 donations from WEWE’s crowdfunding page hosted on the GlobalGiving website and individual donors from inception to date. We still have 91 beneficiaries to be registered into the Health Insurance for 200 Widows and Orphans in Abuja.

WEWE continues to solicit more donor support to reach our target goal.

On behalf of the 109 widows and orphans’ beneficiaries who have benefited from this project to date, we thank all the donors supporting the WEWE’s Project No. #48816 “Health Insurance for 200 Widows and Orphans in Abuja, Nigeria” hosted in GlobalGiving crowdfunding website.
