Unlike many existing programs that stop screening and leave patients to navigate the complex healthcare system on their own, this initiative will provide immediate thermal coagulation treatments at the point of care for those diagnosed with early-stage cervical abnormalities. With a monthly donation of $10, this project will offer cryotherapy treatment to 50 indigent women across Nigeria, ensuring that they not only receive screenings but also the necessary care to prevent cervical cancer.
The problem lies in the gap between cervical cancer screening and treatment. While access to screening is gradually improving in Nigeria, there remains a critical shortage of follow-up treatment options for women diagnosed with early-stage cervical abnormalities. In many cases, women are informed of their condition without immediate treatment. Without immediate treatment, many women who could have been successfully treated at an early stage ultimately develop full-blown cervical cancer.
Through a simple yet effective approach, women diagnosed with pre-invasive cervical cancer will receive immediate treatment, preventing the progression to more advanced stages. By offering a "single visit, screen, and treat" model, this program will ensure that women do not face delays or barriers in accessing treatment, providing a comprehensive and sustainable solution that eliminates the need for patients to navigate the complex and often inaccessible healthcare system for follow-up care.
By combining screening and treatment in one visit, this initiative aligns with the World Health Organization's Single-Visit-Screen-and-Treat (SV-SAT) approach to cervical cancer care. This strategy not only improves early detection but also ensures timely treatment, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes.
