Thank you for your support of this project helping to create stronger and healthier communities through this partnership with Londiani Sub-County hospital and Mayo University Hospital.  Here is our latest update from Carolyne Chepngetich, Health Programme co-ordinator with BCW in Kenya.

"Since our last report, the construction of the trauma centre at Londiani Sub-County Hospital has progressed and is now near completion. The next stage includes –

  • The construction of covered walkways connecting the centre to other departments in the hospital including the operating theatre, wards, laboratory and radiology department.
  • Work on the oxygen pipe line networks.
  • Installation of solar panels to provide sustainable electricity ensuring uninterrupted power for life-saving medical equipment such as defibrillators, oxygen concentrators and monitors as well as providing a solar powered hot water system.
  • Recruitment of extra staff to support in trauma centre.
  • Construction of the pavements around the building and the base for the water tanks is ongoing.

Providing the hospital team with the skills, resources and confidence to handle trauma cases is critical for improving patient outcomes and reducing preventable deaths. Training includes -  Advance Trauma Life Support (ATLS) provides them with the knowledge and skills to assess, stabilize and manage critically injured patient particularly during the “Golden hour”; train the trainer programme where selected health care professionals become ATLS trainers and Continuous Medical Education (CME) to provide ongoing learning opporunties, updates on trauma care protocols, resuscitation techniques and case reviews.

Inside the Trauma Centre, is a modern, open-plan design tailored to the needs of trauma care. The facility will include: 10 patient beds; a minor theatre facility to address life-threatening injuries urgently; a nursing and medical station; storage facilities; ambulance bay; small laboratory; handwashing stations and bathrooms.

Rainwater will be harvested through a system of gutters and storage tanks to collect and store rainwater providing a consistent and eco-friendly water supply for the centre’s operational needs.

Your support is hugely appreciated as fundraising continues to provide the Trauma Centre with equipment including defibrillators, oxygen concentrators, bedside monitors, beds, emergency trolleys, stretchers, wheelchairs, drip stand, IT infrastructure and more.

Thank you for being part of this incredible journey
