Report on education programme for working children

By Mohammed Sayem | Executive Director

Transforming Lives Through Education and Empowerment in Sylhet, Bangladesh

We extend our warmest greetings and heartfelt gratitude for being a part of the incredible journey of UKBET's programme in Sylhet, Bangladesh. Your support has been a beacon of hope for vulnerable working children engaged in domestic labour, and this report is a simple expression of the remarkable impact you've made.

Impact of Your Support

Your generosity has been the driving force behind UKBET's programme, providing numeracy, literacy, and life skills sessions to children who are engaged in labour at domestic settings. Our dedicated community teachers work tirelessly to bring learning to the doorsteps of working children, offering them a chance at a brighter future. Your support equips them with tools to break free from poverty and child labour.

Present Activities

Educational Support:

Currently, 264 children engaged in domestic labour are attending regular education sessions. Additionally, 38 children, who have progressed to school with our support but are struggling to keep up with their peers, are receiving tuition support.

Vocational Training:

79 girls are enrolled in vocational training programmes, learning skills such as clothes making, mobile phone repairing, and electrical work.

Economic Empowerment:

Within the year, 70 families will be provided with micro-grants to start or expand small businesses, reducing their dependence on the income of their children.

Awareness Programmes:

We have already organised four awareness programmes in neighbourhoods where working children live and will conduct 12 more this week.

Teacher Training:

Recently, our community teachers attended a training programme to refresh their knowledge and enhance their skills in teaching and supporting working children and their families.

Story of Rupali (Not Her Real Name), Age 8 years.

Shortly after Rupali (Not Her Real Name), was born, her mother passed away. A few days later, her father also died. She then found shelter with her elder sister, who works as a domestic helper, and her day labourer husband. They couldn’t afford to send her to school, so she had to accompany her sister to work in people's homes. She received her first educational experience from Saniya (not her real name), a community teacher at UKBET. Like other children, Rupali(Not Her Real Name), dreams of attending school. This January, UKBET will help enrol her in school and provide comprehensive support to her family. Join us in changing the lives of many underprivileged working children like Rupali (Not Her Real Name),

Your continued support can transform dreams into reality and help break the cycle of poverty and child labour. Together, we can create a brighter future for the working children of Sylhet. Thank you for being a part of this transformative journey.
