Menstrual health and Menstrual hygiene are still a huge challenge for communities living in the slums and our case the Kibagare slums. Girls in Primary, and secondary school, women, and young mothers living in the slums cannot afford sanitary pads.
Thanks to a partnership with Google Kenya through their CSR team, 371 sanitary packs were donated to our school and the community. One dignity pack contained, a pack of sanitary pads, a toothpaste, a toothbrush, and bathing soap.
With schools reopening instances of girls missing out on school due to a lack of sanitary pads are always a problem. Teachers and the community team were able to distribute the sanitary Packs to 195 girls in Primary school, 90 girls in high school, and 28 young mothers from the slum. A total of 318 sanitary packs were distributed and shared with the girls in January.
A further assessment of the menstrual needs in the slums, it was discovered that young women are juggling motherhood and cannot afford to have or get sanitary pads. Through the community team, 38 women were identified and offered a pack of sanitary towels.
We continue to look into ways of reducing period poverty and are looking to partner with individual, local, and international organizations to help address this issue.
We are grateful to Google Kenya and the many who helped and continue to help with this initiative.
Thanks and Be blessed.
Alfred M Aswani.
