Project Report | May 19, 2022
Spring 2022

By Jake Shapiro | Resource Development Director

Our dialogue weekend in Rahat was planned in response to a crisis in the Negev involving KKL tree planting and Bedouin protests. The purpose of the weekend, as well as the ongoing nature of T2P alumni activities in general, is to allow the community to respond to external crises and events as they occur. This contributes to a lasting community that is enduring in the face of shocks and setbacks, creating a model for how Palestinians and Israelis can continue working together despite the complicated reality.

Eventually, the dialogue weekend in Rahat came just a few days after a Bedouin man carried out a stabbing attack in nearby Be’er Sheva. We felt it critical to utilize this opportunity for our community to come together in this hard moment and support each other. Peace communities live and die in times of crisis – ours has shown that it is resilient, especially as we give opportunities for the community to address crises directly, rather than letting them fester and drive us apart.

The Rahat weekend involved dialogue on topics such as Bedouin society, the Israeli government, Jewish-Arab relations, land and building issues, and Palestinian peoplehood. These subjects allowed participants to build mutual understanding and knowledge about each other’s communities.

In general, this weekend was full of a feeling of warmth and community, allowing participants (with representation from every past cohort of Tech2Peace) to build relationships and a sense of community. The weekend was planned and led by alumni of Tech2Peace, with staff support, which is a strategic structure that we have created intentionally, contributing to the creation of a lasting and self-sufficient community.

Having the community in Rahat at that time, provided ripple effects of inspiration: for the greater Tech2Peace community; the Bedouin community of Rahat; and those exposed to the program on social media - showing that Israelis and Palestinians are continuing to meet and work together despite the difficulties, helping to build a vision of positive cooperation.

We continued the mission of addressing potential strains in the community and building/maintaining strong understanding and relationships across the Tech2Peace community by planning an Iftar dialogue in light of the unfortunate expectation of violence during the time of Ramadan, Pesach, and Easter. Wey had a plan in place for a time of escalation, and in addition to planning the iftar, we worked on updating our policies based on our experience in May 2021, including when and how to offer Zoom dialogues, in-person meetings, alumni outreach, and so on, in order to deal with crisis and escalation.

Escalations continued after the Rahat weekend. We responded by releasing a statement calling for unity and dialogue in the community, helping to maintain relations in the community as well to our online audiences. This statement, as well as our efforts to provide dialogue and meetings for the community, were built on a call from the community to reach out to the other side. Our alumni sent countless texts to each other and in our WhatsApp groups, showing solidarity and support, and looking for a way forward, together.

Following the escalations, our community members met for Zoom dialogue and in-person meetings, and sent each other messages of unity and support, contributing to the maintenance of the community.

In this performance period, we additionally spread a vision of positive cooperation through traditional and social media. There were four articles directly about Tech2Peace or mentioning Tech2Peace, in Calcalist (Hebrew), Wired, Forbes, and a documentary on NHK Japan. We reached hundreds of thousands on social media.

It is worth noting that our alumna, Zada Haj, was named to Forbes Israel 30 under 30. Alongside Jewish co-founders, Zada created the DANA Venture Builder for women-led desert tech startups. Zada is advancing T2P’s mission, showing millions of people around the world that it is both possible and mutually beneficial for Palestinians and Israelis to innovate together.

Capacity Building

We onboarded our inaugural CEO, significantly raising our capacity, which was only possible thanks toUSAID support. We expect to now take major leaps forward building on the strong impact we already have , now that we are actively building sustainable systems and organizational infrastructure, led by Hela, which allow us to scale and spread our impact. We locked down our procurement procedures and USAID compliance, including adapting all pre-award survey recommendations, and had the chance to test ourselves with our first formal USAID activities. We feel ready and confident to continue on a compliant path.
