2019 is off to a great start, as we received word that the DNA test results for 3 of our students were received at the government office this week. If you don't remember, the kids need DNA tests because of spelling errors in their parents paperwork. On the parents ID card, it spells the name one way, but on the birth certificate, it's spelled differently. Most of the students we work with are from rural tribal areas so their parents can speak but not read or write Thai, so they can't tell a government official that their name is spelled wrong. Thankfully, this generation will be the last to have to deal with that issue as education is now compulsory for all children in Thailand.
So, we are excited that this process of getting the results has been so quick. The previous case we did, it took nearly a year to get the results. This time, it was under a month. Progress is finally happening.
The next step is to bring witnesses to the government offices to verify that the kids were really born in Thailand (I know, we have birth certificates AND DNA tests, why do we still need witnesses too? Because, beaurocracy. But, hopefully that will be the last step and by the end of 2019, three more kids will be the proud owners of Thai social security cards and all the benefits that go along with it! Stay tuned for more!
