Adolescence presents unique challenges for young people worldwide, regardless of their geographical location. This period of significant physical and mental transformation marks the transition from childhood to adulthood, bringing with it a host of new and often daunting expectations.
At Lamatola Secondary School in Khaptadchhana, Bajhang, Nepal, we implemented a three-day group counseling and psychological support program for adolescent girls and boys. This initiative also included individual counseling sessions for students facing particularly challenging life circumstances.
The group sessions, conducted daily for two hours with consistent participant groups, employed a variety of interactive methods. In the opening session, students were provided with paper, pencils, and colors and instructed to draw an outline of their bodies. Following this, they were encouraged to color their drawings freely.
Subsequently, the facilitators guided a discussion on physical health, prompting students to list symptoms of illness and their potential causes. Building on this, the facilitators introduced the concept of mental well-being, encouraging students to identify symptoms of mental distress and their underlying causes. This activity fostered open dialogue and helped students connect physical and psychological health.
Over the three days, the program covered a range of essential skills. Experts shared techniques for managing anger, reducing anxiety, enhancing focus, improving sleep quality, and developing effective communication strategies. Participants also learned about building resilience, fostering self-confidence, and navigating difficult emotions.
The program emphasized the importance of social connection and support networks. Through discussions and activities, students were encouraged to reflect on their relationships and identify individuals who could provide support during challenging times. This reinforced the message that seeking help is a positive and constructive step.
Thank you for your invaluable support in empowering adolescent girls and boys in Nepal! Together, we are helping them overcome challenges, build strength and confidence, and embark on adulthood with resilience and dignity.
