Mascot Drawing Contest to Facilitate Science

Dear donors and supporters,

As part of our annual initiative to celebrate children's commitment to local wetlands, we are excited to share a special activity taking place with five rural schools around Lake Tota. Through a creative drawing contest, we’re helping children engage with a complex science topic—hyperspectral monitoring of the Lake Tota watershed—by imagining and illustrating a mascot for the project.

To make this scientific concept accessible, we start by telling a story using kamishibai (a traditional Japanese paper theater), which introduces the hyperspectral project in a simple, engaging way. Then, we invite the children to let their imaginations run free and draw what they think the mascot of this project should look like.

By the end of this month, we’ll be announcing the contest winner and runner-ups. Their efforts will be recognized with small awards, and all of the drawings will be published on the project’s website—linked here.

Explaining a technical subject like hyperspectral imaging to primary school students is certainly a challenge—but the creativity and insight they bring to their drawings make it incredibly rewarding.

Thank you for supporting our Help Us Raise Wetland Conservation by Prizing Kids project on GlobalGiving. Your generosity plays a vital role in making these educational and inspiring activities possible, helping children gain a deeper appreciation for wetlands through science, art, and imagination.

With heartfelt thanks,

Felipe Velasco
