Dear supporters,
Haiti has seen a sharp increase in instability and gang violence in recent years. On June 03, it unfortunately hit home. One of our partner schools, College Les Sophos d’ Haïti, located in Delmas 33, was violently forced to close. In April, gangsters came brandishing a gun in front of the students and demanded the director of the school close it down. The thugs came back in June, breached the school doors and proceeded to destroy benches, desk, chairs, boards, and ripped up all the paperwork including report cards and birth certificates. We are grateful no students were in the school at that time of this vandalism. Why this heinous act? Because these thugs want to sell the land, which does not belong to the school director who pays the rent with the help of Home Roots Foundation. Although the owners of the land have paperwork, stealing land has also increased in Haiti. The police in this matter were useless.
Now, we are scrambling to have makeshift classes at the home of the school director so students can take exams and finish out the year. These students cannot afford to go elsewhere and face the fact of either “pay tuition or go home” at other schools. Home Roots will work with the school, parents and students to see what can be done in the future for a new location. We are resolute in the commitment to the advancement of Haiti and its people. This will not deter us. We will provide an updates.
